Site Security Messages (SSL)

From time to time, one of your visitors may let you know they’re seeing a warning like “Site Not Secure” or “Your connection is not private” when loading your site. This doesn’t always mean there’s an actual problem with your site — but it’s important to check.

Steps You Can Take

  1. Verify your SSL setup
    • Use the free Qualys SSL Labs test: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest
    • Enter your site’s address, and the tool will scan your SSL certificate and server configuration. If the report shows your SSL is valid and properly set up, your site is secure.
  2. Confirm whether the issue is browser-specific
    • Ask your visitor to try accessing the site in another browser or on another device. If the warning only shows up in one place, it may be a local issue rather than a problem with your site. If it persists across browsers for an individual visitor, the cause may be something else on the visitor’s end — such as cached data, system clock settings, or their network (for example, public Wi-Fi or corporate firewalls).
  3. Keep browser compatibility in mind
    • Out-of-date browsers don’t always recognize newer SSL standards. If a visitor is using an old browser, they may see warnings even when your SSL is perfectly healthy. This is outside of your control, but you can reassure your visitor that updating their browser usually resolves the issue.
