3D Secure

Here is some information related to 3D Secure, as well as some 'next steps' if you'd like to proceed to get this enabled on your site!

What is 3D Secure, and why enable it?

3D Secure (3DS) is a security protocol that adds an extra layer of protection for online transactions. It verifies a customer’s identity through methods like a password, SMS code, or temporary PIN, reducing the risk of fraud and shifting liability for chargebacks caused by unauthorized transactions to the issuing bank.

Key Benefits:

  • Fraud Prevention: Protects against unauthorized card use.
  • Chargeback Liability Shift: Reduces your business's exposure to fraud-related chargebacks.
  • Increased Trust: Enhances customer confidence in your online checkout process.

What You Need to Know:

  • Cost: There’s a $0.20 fee per successful transaction. You can choose to pass this to customers as a transaction fee.
  • Compatibility: 3DS is available when using Magensa, Clover, Card Connect, or PayPal’s PayFlow Pro.

How Does it Work?

When a cardholder attempts to make a purchase, 3DS authentication looks at several factors, such as the order total, the standing for that purchaser with chargeback history and their IP proximity to billing data. The issuing bank then determines if they are willing to take on the risk of the transaction in the case that the customer opens a chargeback. If the issuing bank trusts the purchase, it will go through in a frictionless manner. If they don't trust the purchase, they will not take on liability without a challenge presented to the customer. At this point the cardholder will have an opportunity to verify their identity using two-factor authentication.

Next Steps:

  • Setup: We’ll need a few things...
    • the VAR sheet from your payment processor
    • the BIN codes for each card type you accept (visa, mastercard, discover).
    • your choice between frictionless (no customer interaction) or with-friction (requiring verification like a password or SMS code).

NOTE: You will have access to the friction option within Spark and can edit them once the initial setup is completed.

Let us know if you’d like to proceed or if you’d prefer a call to go over the details, including the differences between frictionless and with-friction options. We’d be happy to help!
